When you turn on the tap, you assume what comes out will be drinkable. Indeed, the UN General Assembly recognises access to safe drinking water as a human right. And yet, more than a quarter of the world's population lives in water-stressed countries, and a similar number use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces, according to the World Health Organization. An interesting map has been published by a UK company showing water quality around the world. They sourced each country's EPI score directly from Yale University's Environmental Performance Index, in which higher scores indicate safer drinking water, and created a data visualisation representing these scores by size, also taking into account Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance. A higher score means safer water. There were ten European countries scoring a perfect 10, and New Zealand scored 74.5/100. We had no involvement in this study, nor make any representations as to its accuracy, but just present is as an interesting viewpoint on global water quality.
