Today is World Backflow Prevention Day, dedicated to the protection of our drinking water supply. Backflow prevention devices and cross-connection control programs are the unsung heroes of water safety and often go unnoticed, but they play a crucial role in supplying clean and safe water all over the world. Backflow refers to an unwanted water flow in the reverse direction. A backflow preventer is a device that's installed on your home's water pipes that allows water to flow in one direction but never in the opposite direction. Its sole job is to prevent drinking water from being contaminated due to backflow. If you are a Master Plumbers Member then they are holding courses throughout the country in Sept/Oct/Nov for further information.
TVNZ's Seven Sharp took the opportunity to highlight just how serious backflow contamination can be to our health and why we need to know how to prevent backflow.
