By the end of 2024, over 500,000 New Zealanders will enjoy safer drinking water as councils across the country work to meet Taumata Arowai’s water safety standards. This push follows the Queenstown cryptosporidium outbreak, which highlighted the need for improved water treatment barriers.

Most councils are on track to meet the December deadline to install critical protozoa and bacterial protection. Nine councils have already completed the upgrades, while 11 more are nearing completion. Six councils have been granted extensions into 2025 for long-term solutions.

These efforts are a major step toward ensuring safe drinking water for all New Zealanders.
