Your morning routine might need an update! A recent warning from Manukau Water highlights a potential health risk lurking in your first sip of tap water, especially in areas with soft water.
The lack of minerals like calcium and magnesium in soft water makes it more susceptible to leaching lead from pipes and fittings, particularly newer ones. The primary culprits are brass alloy pipes and fittings, and concerns are raised about unregulated manufacturing practices. While lead-free options exist in other countries, their availability in New Zealand remains unclear. Experts recommend flushing your tap for a few seconds before drinking, especially if it hasn't been used for several hours. This simple step can significantly reduce your exposure to potentially contaminated water. Manukau Water CEO Raveen Jaduram stresses the need for stricter regulations on tap materials to prevent lead exposure at its source.
